RVS 201 is a relatively cheap solution to stainless steel and contains around 17% chromium and 5% nickel. The alloy can oxidise quickly, but does not rust. Mounting tape made of stainless steel 201 is ideal for indoor use. For outdoor use, a higher alloy is more often chosen, namely RVS 304 and RVS 316.

RVS AISI 304 is also called the 18/8 alloy (18% chromium and 8% nickel). RVS 304 provides good strength relative to the material's good formability, making the alloy suitable for many indoor and outdoor applications. RVS 304 is somewhat sensitive to chlorides and acids, which can cause (localised) corrosion. Therefore, more extreme environments, such as seawater and coastal areas, may not be suitable for stainless steel AISI 304. For any other indoor or outdoor application, RVS 304 mounting tape can be used. RVS AISI 316 contains 2% molybdenum in addition to 16% chromium and 10% nickel. Due to the high nickel percentage and the addition of molybdenum, AISI 316 is more resistant to chlorides and corrosion. Therefore, for aggressive applications such as water and coastal areas, on a busy road, near industry or laboratories, use stainless steel 316 mounting tape.
