Guidelines for modular stairs and work platforms: is your installation compliant or risking fines?
A non-compliant access solution is legally not a safe workplace. In case of a work accident with injury, you risk fines up to €100,000 and personal liability.
A modular staircase or work platform must be installed correctly and comply with all safety regulations. This means the structure must be stable, with the correct slope, sufficient load capacity, and equipped with prescribed railings and safety features. Access to work platforms must be safe and unobstructed, without obstacles. The location where a staircase or platform is placed must be well-lit at all times and must have the appropriate warning signals and pictograms. Materials must be resistant to the environmental conditions in which they are used.
European Standard EN ISO 14122:
- Stairs: slope angle between 30° and 38°
- Railings: at least 110 cm high
- Intermediate rail: at a maximum distance of 50 cm from top rail or platform
- Minimum stair width: 80 cm for regular access
- Minimum free space above platforms: 210 cm
- Maximum distance between steps: 25 cm
All access stairs and platforms must have sufficient load capacity for the intended use, including a safety margin. Railings must be installed on both sides and extend to the end of the platform. Surfaces must be non-slip and allow for drainage where necessary. For changes in level exceeding 50 cm, a staircase or ladder with railings is mandatory.
All modular stairs and work platforms from Nedelko comply with all specified guidelines, such as EN ISO 14122 and Arbowet 3.16.
American Standard OSHA 1910.25 & 1910.29:
- Stairs: slope angle between 30° and 50°
- Railings: at least 107 cm high
- Minimum stair width: 56 cm
- Load capacity: at least 454 kg
- Risers: at least 9.5 cm high where required
- Intermediate rail: mandatory on platforms higher than 122 cm
